We spend so much time on designposts.net talking about themes, layout, design etc. that I thought it would be a nice to talk about another aspect managing website – monetization.
Like many publishers, I’m sure you spend a lot of time trying to make your website look as nice as possible. You make sure to pick a theme that will differentiate your site from others, but will also allow users to easily navigate the site to find the great content that you have produced! After spending all that time building the website, it’s understandable if you would like to make some money off of your hard work.
One of the best ways to make money on a site is through serving ads. It is essentially “renting out space” on your website to advertisers, which allows you to make money from advertisements. The problem that most publishers face when serving ads is that it is a difficult to balance both keeping users happy and making money.
On one hand, you want to make as much money as possible from your website. On the other hand, you don’t want to show ads throughout the site in a way that spams users out. Finding this happy medium between making money and keeping visitors happy requires you to test out and analyze what the right combination of ads is – which is rather difficult.
But there is good news for all you publishers – there is now a free way to automate the ad optimization process on your site through a Google Certified Publishing Partner called Ezoic.
Ezoic has created a technology called the Ad Tester, which will test thousands of ad combinations on your site to determine the right number, size, location, and color of ads on any given page of a website. The Ezoic system does this by monitoring how certain ads affect user experience metrics as well as revenue. The combinations that make the most money per user, while maintaining good UX metrics, will be shown to visitors on the site.
So How Does Ezoic Work Technically?
In order to work with Ezoic, you will have to integrate one of 3 ways:
- Integrate via CloudFlare
- Switch Nameservers at your Registrar
Ezoic has said that in order to get the most out of the system, it is highly recommended to switch nameservers or integrate via CloudFlare. The JS option is there mainly for publishers who don’t have access to switching nameservers. If you are worried about changing nameservers (like I was) the Ezoic representatives assured that it won’t cause you to lose control of the site.
Creating Ad Units
Within the Ezoic dashboard, you are able to create ad units – or “ad placeholders” – which are places on your site that ads could potentially serve ads on your site. One thing that was great about Ezoic was the ability to preserve existing ad units within the Ezoic ad code. This allows you to use Ezoic for a percentage of traffic, and still show your original ads to the rest of your traffic.
The Ezoic reps recommended that you create as many ad units as you can possibly test. The more ad units, the better chance of improving revenue!
Don’t worry about Ezoic showing too many ads if you create a lot of ad units. All this does is give Ezoic the capability to serve ads in the designated locations. However, when using Ezoic you may see up to 5 Google display ads on your site. This is because Ezoic publishers have the ability to serve up to 5 Google ads, rather than the standard 3 with AdSense.
Once you have created all the ad units you want to test on your site, you can use Ezoic’s Chrome Extension to see how the different ads appear on the site. It will also allow you to create more ad units with the click of a button!
Turn on Ezoic
Once you are happy with the way everything is setup, you can turn on the Ezoic system and the ad testing begins! **I will mention that the Ezoic system doesn’t turn on immediately, as it requires 24 hours for nameserver propagation** Once Ezoic is up and running, you will begin to see the ads on your site, and stats will begin to collect in your dashboard. The Ezoic dashboard will show both the performance the Ezoic ads, as well as your original ads. This is really helpful because you can see how the ads are performing during the exact same time frame.
Ezoic is definitely worth trying out if you are looking maximize your earnings through advertising. If you are willing to put in a little time and effort, and you are at least somewhat knowledgeable with the technical side of things, you should have no problem getting Ezoic up and running on your site within 24 hours. Then you can go back to working on your content and design of the site, knowing that Ezoic will take care of maximizing your revenue. Try Ezoic today!
